Robinson has leaned in to science education after retiring from the National Institutes of Health, trading her laboratory for elementary school classrooms and forgoing a full retirement. She participates in the American Association for the Advancement of Science's STEM Volunteer Program, which pairs scientists and engineers with elementary, middle, and high school teachers at nine school districts in the Washington, D.C., area, including those in three Virginia counties and three cities, and two in Maryland.
School districts across the country are increasingly becoming a major target of malicious cyberattacks, leaving both the federal government and state governments scrambling to find ways to fight back. Recent cyberattacks on school districts in Louisiana, Virginia and Oklahoma have highlighted the threat.
Virginia Tech is building its newest campus in the city of Alexandria, Virginia, just south of the planned location of Amazon’s site in Arlington. Virginia Tech President Tim Sands made the announcement Monday morning in Alexandria, joined by officials including U.S. Sen.
“State and local officials continue to hand out goodies even though evidence suggests that such subsidies have little effect on jobs,” Liu declared. “Sure, we all want good corporate citizens, but companies will always put self-interest and shareholders before the needs of communities, no matter how much they receive in incentives.”
Lawmakers and officials whose towns won out in the search are welcoming the company with open arms, predicting that its arrival will bring massive economic investments into their communities. But others are raising questions about the wisdom of gifting billions in taxpayer dollars to the second most highly valued company in the world when local infrastructures are struggling.

We look at the number of available workers and which states are doing the best to attract them. We look at how educated they are. We examine which states have a Right to Work law, which affirms the right of every American to work for a living without being compelled to belong to a union and pay dues. To find states with the nation's top talent we measure in-demand science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) skills, state worker-development programs, union membership and more.
Officials from Amazon.com toured sites in Washington, Montgomery County, Md., and Northern Virginia last week -- the latest sign that the tech giant is seriously considering adding a second headquarters with as many as 50,000 jobs to the D.C. area, according to officials in all three jurisdictions. There are at least nine sites in the D.C. area proposed for the tech giant’s expansion, dubbed HQ2.
