Lawmakers and experts voiced concerns Wednesday about America’s future as a leader in artificial intelligence technology. Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) cautioned during a Senate Commerce, Science and Transportation subcommittee hearing that the U.S. could lose its spot as a leader in developing AI technology.
The head of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) stressed to lawmakers on Tuesday that while fully autonomous cars are much further down the road, officials are working hard on cybersecurity concerns and creating a unified regulatory framework before they arrive.
One advantage of using technology in teaching, according to Goel's experience, is that one can teach students faster. He once noticed that the virtual students kept asking the same question, so he introduced a new assistant to the class: an AI computer program named Jill Watson. Being an AI, Watson is able to answer all the students' questions faster than a human, and can respond to inquiries anytime of any day. Goel said he hopes that teachers will be able to use AI for their own on- and off- classroom activities, too.
The examples in this report cover 14 sectors of the economy and society, yet they only scratch the surface of the many ways that AI is driving innovation, generating substantial social and economic value, and transforming everyday life around the globe. As with any new technology, there will inevitably be detractors who fear change and how it might impact them. While policymakers should respond to legitimate concerns, they should not allow alarmists to delay progress.
